Torus Motion begins shipping axial-flux motors and collectors to OEMs

The Chennai-based company says its in-house products carry AIS and ISO certifications following five years of development.

Chennai-based Torus Motion has begun shipping its axial-flux motors and controllers to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), marking the commercial rollout of products developed over five years. Founder and Director Vignesh Manimaran said the motors and controllers were designed and manufactured in-house. He also cited AIS and ISO certifications for the products.

Motors offer peak power of up to 20 kilowatts

The V1 and V2 series each come in air-cooled and liquid-cooled configurations. All four variants carry an IP67 rating, feature a magnetic encoder, and support 48-volt, 60-volt, or 72-volt systems.

The air-cooled V1 delivers peak power of up to 7 kilowatts and peak torque of up to 36 newton-meters, against 9 kilowatts and 40 newton-meters for the liquid-cooled V1.

The air-cooled V2 peaks at 15 kilowatts and 55 newton-meters with air cooling and 20 kilowatts and 60 newton-meters with liquid cooling.

Torus Motion says the axial-flux design is 50% more compact than conventional radial-flux motors.

Controllers accept five motor types

The TESC Gen 5 line has four versions: 100, 300, 500 and 700. Each operates at 40 to 84 volts and works with brushless DC, permanent magnet synchronous, axial flux, interior permanent magnet, and high-speed reluctance motors.

Rated current starts at 50 amperes on the TESC 100 and reaches 160 amperes on the TESC 700, with peak current of 110 to 500 amperes RMS. The controllers use Controller Area Network (CAN) 2.0A/B communication, receive over-the-air updates, and include an Internet of Things module.

Motor-controller pairings target vehicle types

Torus Motion offers motor-controller for three-wheelers, golf carts, autonomous and utility vehicles, tow tugs and forklifts.

The L3 three-wheeler package uses a V1 motor with a TESC 100 controller. The L5 three-wheeler package uses a V2 motor, a TESC 500 or 700 controller, a dual-speed automatic gearbox, a digital speedometer and a throttle system.

Golf cart configurations range from a V1 air-cooled motor and TESC 100 for two-seaters to a V2 liquid-cooled motor and TESC 700 for six- to eight-seaters. Tow tugs and forklifts pair V2 motors with TESC 500 or 700 controllers. For tow tugs and forklifts, the company pairs V2 motors with TESC 500 or 700 controllers.

Founder reports a sale

Nandan GSE Pvt Ltd bought Torus Motion’s axial-flux motors and controllers the week before, founder and director Vignesh Manimaran said in a July 16 LinkedIn post.

He said Raghunandan Jagdish, the buyer’s managing director and CEO, had mentored the company.
