India’s PM Modi inaugurates Arvind’s first Uttar Pradesh garment factory

The ₹150 crore Varanasi facility will manufacture knitwear using automated sewing technology and is expected to create over 1,000 jobs.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated a ₹150 crore garment factory in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, built by Ahmedabad-based textile maker Arvind Ltd. (NSE: ARVIND), according to an exchange filing. The facility is the company’s first manufacturing unit in the state.

The factory will produce knitwear using automated sewing technology. The site covers 5.5 acres and has approximately 65,000 square feet of built-up area.

Arvind projects revenue and hiring estimates

Arvind estimates the plant has the potential to generate ₹250 crore (2.5 billion rupees) in revenue. The company expects the factory to employ more than 1,000 people, predominantly women, and to support ancillary activity across supply chains, logistics and local services. It has also established worker hostels to support employees.

PMO issues advance statement

The Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement on Saturday that products manufactured at the facility would reach global markets, citing Arvind’s international customer base. The statement also described the project as predominantly women-led.

Ceremony draws state leaders

Arvind Chairman Sanjay Lalbhai and Vice Chairmen Punit Lalbhai and Kulin Lalbhai accompanied Modi on a tour of the facility, the filing said. Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also attended, along with senior government officials and industry leaders.
