MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives” Opens in Tokyo

TOKYO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The East Japan Railway Foundation for Cultural Innovation has officially announced the opening of MoN Takanawa: The Museum of Narratives on March 28, 2026. Located within TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY near Shinagawa Station, the new cultural destination is positioned at one of Japan’s key transportation hubs with direct rail access to both Haneda and Narita airports.

Designed by KENGO KUMA & ASSOCIATES, the museum features a striking architectural concept and introduces a new type of “Experimental Museum” that combines traditional arts, science, technology, and entertainment through cross-disciplinary programming.

A New Cultural Hub Connecting Tradition and Innovation

MoN Takanawa is operated by the East Japan Railway Foundation for Cultural Innovation, which was established by East Japan Railway Company to help create a major cultural center within TAKANAWA GATEWAY CITY.

The Takanawa district carries historical significance as the birthplace of Japan’s first railway line, established in 1872. The preserved Takanawa Embankment symbolizes this pioneering legacy and connects directly to the museum’s mission of “transporting culture to the next hundred years.”

The name “MoN” carries dual meanings in Japanese, representing both “gate” and “question.” The museum’s concept, “A gateway for all, a narrative for everyone,” reflects its goal of creating and sharing new cultural narratives through collaboration between people, ideas, and artistic disciplines.

Twice each year, the museum will introduce a “Season Theme” that explores future-focused questions through exhibitions and cultural programs integrating Japanese tradition, education, entertainment, and emerging technologies.

Innovative Spaces for Cultural Experiences

MoN Takanawa includes a variety of dedicated spaces designed for immersive cultural experiences, including:

  • 1,500 square meters of exhibition space
  • A full-stage LED theater
  • A traditional 100-mat tatami hall

The museum also extends its cultural atmosphere into public spaces with scenic terraces designed for:

  • Ashiyu (foot baths)
  • Tsukimi (moon viewing)
  • Hanami (cherry blossom viewing)

Additional facilities include restaurants, cafés, and a museum shop.

The venue also emphasizes sustainability and storytelling through its interior design. Visitors will encounter furniture and installations created from upcycled wood sourced from railway forests, along with reused furniture pieces previously featured at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan.

Opening Season Theme: “Life as Culture”

From March through September 2026, the museum’s inaugural season theme, “Life as Culture,” will feature nine programs exploring how human creativity and cultural narratives continue to evolve into the future.

Featured Programs

Opening Special Exhibition: Spiral, Spiral: Evolving Human Narratives

This immersive exhibition explores the concept of the “spiral” as a recurring force found across nature, science, technology, and culture. From galaxies and oceans to Jomon pottery and human fingerprints, the exhibition examines how spiral patterns have influenced both the natural world and human creativity throughout history.

Opening Special Performance: MANGALOGUE: HINOTORI

MANGALOGUE transforms manga into a large-scale live entertainment experience, bringing Osamu Tezuka’s legendary work HINOTORI to life through immersive visual storytelling and theatrical performance on a monumental scale.
