Apple unveils first foldable iPhone Duo at $1,999

Apple enters the foldable smartphone market with the launch of iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone. The launch, which starts at $1,999, was also the first major iPhone event led by John Ternus since he became Apple’s chief executive on Sep.1.

The iPhone Duo opens to a 7.6-inch inner display and has a 5.4-inch outer display when folded. Apple said the device is its thinnest iPhone when opened and uses a grade 5 titanium body and a precision hinge.

The phone is powered byApple’s A20 Pro chip and includes a custom vapor chamber and dual-battery architecture for thermal management and battery performance. It runs iOS27 and supports Apple Intelligence and Siri AI features. The device also supports Apple Pencil input, while its split-screen functions allow users to work across two apps or windows.

Competition in foldables

The launch places Apple in direct competition with companies including Samsung and Huawei, which have sold foldable smartphones for several years. Reuters reported that Samsung remained the largest global foldable-phone vendor as Apple entered the category. AP reported that foldable phones currently account for less than 5% of global smartphone sales, underscoring the category’s smaller position within the broader market.

Apple's entry comes as rival manufacturers have already developed multiple generations of foldable phones, making hardware refinement, durability, and software integration key areas of competition

Other Products unveiled

Apple also introduced the iPhone 18 Pro Max, starting at $1,199 and $1,299, respectively. Both use the A20 chip and feature a 48-megapixel Fusion Main camera with variable aperture. Preorders begin Sept.12, with retail availability from Sept.18.

The Company also unveiled Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, along with AirPods 5. The new watch models include updated health-sensing capabilities, while the latest AirPods add active noise cancellation in an open-ear design.

For Ternus, who succeeded longtime CEO Tim Cook, the event marked his first iPhone launch as chief executive. The product lineup also extends Apple’s use of artificial intelligence.
